Women Incarceration Panel Discussion

Please join us for a panel discussion on Women’s Incarceration and Prison Reform Priorities on Thursday, February 17th at 5:30 PM at Slocum Auditorium. This program is the product of a College of Law collaboration with the Bond Schoeneck & King Series on Race & Justice in Central New York, the Onondaga County Bar Association, the Central New York Women’s Bar Association, and the Syracuse University Art Museum, which is currently hosting the Per(Sister): Incarcerated Women of Louisiana exhibition. A reception at the Art Museum and tours of the exhibition will follow the one-hour panel discussion.  For more information about the exhibition (including information about an upcoming conversation with its co-producers), you can visit the SU Museum website.

Panel participants include Professor Paula Johnson (discussing her research on the impacts of incarceration on Black women), as well as presentations from Colleen Gibbons, L’17, Center for Court Innovation; Nilieka Brown, Prison Rape Elimination Act Project Coordinator at Vera House; and current College of Law Students Molly Graham, L’22, Matthew Mayers, L’23, and Jameela Suleiman, L’23.  Professor Lauryn Gouldin will moderate the discussion.

Suffolk County District Attorney: Summer Internship

The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office has an exciting opportunity for law students who are interested in becoming prosecutors.

Interns will have the opportunity to gain an in-depth view of the life of an Assistant District Attorney. Interns will be assigned to one of the many Bureaus (e.g. Narcotics, Homicide, District Court, Family Protection) within the Office where they will support the work of our attorneys. Interns will participate in weekly presentations where they learn about some of the most important cases handled by the DA’s Office.

Monroe County Judicial Internship

The 7th Judicial District Internship Committee is seeking to hire a law student interns for the summer and fall semesters. Internships will be part-time in the fall (8-12 hours per week), and full-time in the summer.

Strong research and writing skills are required. No specific course requirements, although New York civil and/or criminal procedure knowledge would be beneficial. Exact positions vary based upon availability of supervising judges. If a student has a particular interest, they will make every effort to set up interviews for possible placement in that area.

Delaware County Public Defender’s Office: Externship

The Delaware County Public Defender’s Office is hiring a part-time extern for their office in Delhi, NY.

Externs will participate in an active family law public defender practice. Externs will participate in interviewing indigent clients; drafting offense, support, and custody petitions; legal research; and arguing for ex parte temporary orders of protection before Family Court judges under a Student Practice Order, and with the direct assistance of DCPD attorneys

SJD Speaker Series

The Syracuse University College of Law’s Doctor of Juridical Science (S.J.D.) in Law is a research doctorate, comparable to a Ph.D. in other disciplines. Beginning this month, each SJD student will give a presentation on research related to their dissertations.
